DARE TO REACH - DARE TO STRETCH!

This is a short SONGS OF GIANTS update! I spent the day celebrating the birthday of the most important person in my world, my lovely wife, Carol. And while we were doing that, we passed our 6th Stretch Goal! Now everyone of you who have ordered the print level of the book and higher will be getting another signed art print as part of your rewards!

Next up is the set of three portraits of our Masters of Pulp Poetry: Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. P. Lovecraft! Because of all the great support and help from every single one of you, SONGS OF GIANTS is going to be a sensational package. Keep sharing the link! That is the single best help you can give to help me add more and more to this campaign.

And tomorrow I will announce three more Stretch Goals!

COOL THINGS ARE HAPPENING!

As a publisher, I get excited by things that probably seem odd to the average reader. But today, two things happened that really got my blood racing!

First, we got assigned our SONGS OF GIANTS ISBN and Barcode. And the back cover is now finished and ready to go!

Second, we have the signing plates in the studio! I have started working up the sketches for the Artist Proof level and the Executive Publisher level. Here is one of the sketches, done on a test sheet. Now I have 1100 of these to sign and quite a few to do sketches in. (1100 are printed to allow for damage in binding and me spelling my name wrong, etc!) These will be ready to ship to the printer by the end of the campaign, so we will be on schedule for June delivery.

The untrimmed signing plate, with an original sketch and without!

Thanks again for all your great support and keep up the sharing! Not far to go for the next stretch goal!

THE PROMISE

THE COMPLETE PAN

Hey Folks! Just a short SONGS OF GIANTS update to follow through on a promise. Every Saturday I share a sketch or a work in progress on my Facebook Fan page. And this week I shared two versions of my work in progress for the illustration of H. P. Lovecraft's "Pan." When I posted those, I promised to share the completed piece. And since you are my wonderful supporters, you see it first:

When I was working on this, I planned it as the final illustration for the book. But since then I found a spot in SONGS OF GIANTS for just one more illustration! So I'm working on that one right now. Then the illustrations for the book will be complete. Except for touch-ups. I do plan to add just a few touch-ups as I finalize the layouts and type placement.

Meanwhile, thanks again for sharing the links. Keep it up and I'll have to add even more Stretch goals!

STRETCHING THINGS!

LIFE IS ABOUT THE JOURNEY, BUT GOALS ARE THE REWARDS!

We are sneaking up on the 6th Stretch Goal for SONGS OF GIANTS! Everyone has been so great about sharing the campaign link. I am just blown away by all the help you are giving the book. And because of your help, we are likely to be adding the third signed art print to the rewards soon!

But that’s not all! We are working – well – I am working to come up with more rewards for additional backers. And we have Stretch Goal #7 posted to the campaign now! If we can unlock this one, everyone at the print level and above will be getting a set of three color portraits of our three Pulp Poets! And I will even sign them!

So, this is the graphic of the portraits. Sharp-eyed backers will notice that the portrait of Robert E. Howard is still a mystery! This is because I will have to paint that portrait to be able to include it. So I will be working on that immediately after we hit the goal. And I am very much looking forward to it. I want to do justice to Howard and come up with a great portrait. When – IF – we hit that goal, I will be sure to share process with you.

Meanwhile, everyone keep sharing and helping us hit these additional goals. I want this book to be overwhelming! Thanks for your support!

VIDEO VISIT for APRIL 6th
about 5 years ago – Fri, Mar 29, 2019 at 01:46:18 AM

WE GOT BUMPED!

If you tuned into CROWDFUNDING COMICS last night, you probably noticed I was not there, and SONGS OF GIANTS was not the subject! They had to change their scheduling. But hopefully you were able to enjoy Billy Tucci's and John Broglia's new project, ZOMBIE-SAMA! These guys are a powerhouse of talent and you can count on them to deliver.

Meanwhile, I am now scheduled for 8pm on April 6th. Mark your calendars and be on hand to get some behind the scenes info and a tour of my art studio.

In other news, Mark Redfield and Jennifer Rouse let me know today that the audio book version of SONGS OF GIANTS quite possibly will be delivered in advance of the print book - so everything will be on hand to ship out in early June. Which is important for you to get your rewards, and important for me to get it all done before I have to rush off to the San Diego Comic Con.

Speaking of conventions - Here is the big news about my show of original art at the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention. Here is a secret bit of information just for you: I will have some of my originals from SONGS OF GIANTS. They won't be on display, but if you come to my table and ask, I will be happy to give you a sneak peek! I will leave you with the entire news release.

Mark Wheatley Original Art Show at Windy City

Originals for New Edgar Rice Burroughs Book on Display

March 26, 2019

For Immediate Release

Baltimore, Maryland – Acclaimed artist and pulp enthusiast Mark Wheatley’s work will be the subject of an extensive gallery show at the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention, Friday-Sunday, April 12-14, 2019 at The Westin Lombard Yorktown Center, 70 Yorktown Center Lombard, Illinois 60148.

In the spotlight will be his illustrations for Swords Against the Moon Men, part of the new “Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs” series published by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Conceived as a continuation of Burroughs’ Moon novels, novelist Christopher Paul Carey expands on the original series while remaining solidly true to the established lore not only of the Moon series, but several other of Burroughs’ series as well. Carey, newly appointed as ERB, Inc.’s Director of Publishing, will join Wheatley at the show.

Wheatley drew and painted the illustrations for the book using a combination of traditional and digital media, “I’ve been painting in Photoshop for over a decade, but I still prefer to draw in ink. So I rough out my composition in Photoshop, print that and ink over it, scan that back into the computer and paint!” he said.

The inked originals will be framed and presented along with high quality, full size Giclée prints of the digital paintings, offering a unique chance to see the entire set of illustrations for the book in one place. This is made possible because a single collector purchased all the art for the book and is allowing it to be displayed for the public.

“I have never been able to attend before, but I’ve heard so many good things about the Windy City show. Certainly, so many of my friends will be attending. Not only will I have a good opportunity to introduce the public to some of the plans I have in store for the publishing program at Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. I’ll also get to check out Mark Wheatley’s amazing art show for my novel Swords Against the Moon Men. I can’t wait!” Carey said.

Wheatley, the acclaimed writer-illustrator of the DC/Vertigo graphic novel Breathtaker, the cutting edge First Comics series Mars, pioneering WaRP Graphics mini-series Blood of the Innocent, and ComicMix/IDW Publishing graphic novel series Lone Justice, among other projects, is also an experienced pulp collector himself. Active with The Burroughs Bibliophiles, he has illustrated or painted covers for The Burroughs Bulletin, The National Capital Panthans Journal and Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Second Century. With frequent collaborator Marc Hempel, he also created Tarzan the Warrior and produced many Tarzan comic book series for Semic International, published by Malibu in the US. 2018 saw the release of two new Wheatley illustrated Philip José Farmer books from Meteor House, Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time and The Philip José Farmer Centennial Collection.

Wheatley’s also painted covers for The Spider: Satan’s Murder Machines by Norvell W. Page, Amazon Nights by Arthur O. Friel, and adapted The Spider into a graphic novel and followed that up with his own pulp-inspired Frankenstein Mobster. He has illustrated new pulp fiction for Airship 27’s award winning Rick Ruby series. His most recent pulp-infused project is his own creation, in collaboration with G. D. Falksen; Doctor Cthulittle. Copies of the signed, limited edition of Doctor Cthulittle will be available at Windy City. Additionally, art from Doctor Cthulittle and several of his other pulp projects will be on view at the show.

“I’ve been honored to have shows at the Library of Congress and many other prestigious venues across the country, but sharing my art with pulp fans is very much about connecting with my own clan. It’s an awesome experiance!” Wheatley said.

Swords Against the Moon Men was a great project to be a part of, and I can’t wait for everyone to see these pieces in person. Likewise, it will be wonderful to see fans get a chance to meet Christopher, whose work could easily have inspired three or four times the number of illustrations needed for the book,” he said.

ABOUT MARK WHEATLEY

Inducted in July 2017 into The Overstreet Hall of Fame, Mark Wheatley most recently has continued his string of popular Doctor Who covers for Titan, completed a set of Stargate Atlantis covers for American Mythology, and provided the cover and interior illustrations for the new novel Man of War by Heidi Ruby Miller from Meteor House, continuing the Two Hawks series from Philip Jose Farmer. Prior to that, his work for CBS Television was featured on The Millers, 2 Broke Girls, and Super Clyde, and the Square Roots pilot for ABC. In print he was featured in the acclaimed Jungle Tales of Tarzan from Dark Horse Comics, on the cover of the Meteor House release of Exiles of Kho by Christopher Paul Carey, and his own well received art book, Stars, which presents elaborate line art portraits of actors, musicians, and authors. ABOUT THE WINDY CITY PULP & PAPER CONVENTION

The Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention was first held in 2001 and sees its 19th annual show in 2019.  It's the largest collectibles show in the country devoted primarily to pulps.  Roughly 100 dealers from the U.S., Canada and the U.K.  will display their wares in a massive a dealer room featuring 180 tables of pulps, paperbacks, original illustration art, golden age comics, OTR, vintage movie memorabilia and more.  During the day on Fridays and Saturdays, attendees can also attend film programming, featuring movies based on pulp stories, while in the evenings and on Sunday are panels devoted to the pulps.  One of the highlights of any Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention are the Friday and Saturday night auctions, and this year's auctions will continue that trend.  The 2019 Friday night estate auction is devoted to material from the legendary collection of Bob Weinberg, one of pulp fandom's best known collectors, while the Saturday night auction features material from the estate of Glenn Lord, for decades the literary executor for the Robert E. Howard estate.  The Windy City convention is also known for its amazing art show.  For 2019, in addition to the art of Mark Wheatley, the art show will be displaying art from Planet Stories, as well as pulp art relating to pulps, authors and artists with a Chicago connection, including Edgar Rice Burroughs and J. Allan St. John.  Visit www.windycitypulpandpaper.com for more info.
